Frieze London
At the Frieze BMW Lounge, art enthusiasts and collectors gathered to celebrate the launch of Esther Mahlangu: To Paint is in My Heart, a new book honoring the life and work of pioneering South African artist Esther Mahlangu. Esteemed art figures Azu Nwagbogu, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Thomas Girst, who authored the book and conducted exclusive interviews with Mahlangu, were present to discuss her legacy and the unique insights captured in this commemorative volume.
In a tribute to Mahlangu’s groundbreaking career, the BMW Lounge featured two of her captivating paintings on display, highlighting her role as the first woman to create a BMW Art Car in 1991. Actor, art collector, and Talk Art host Russell Tovey curated the lounge with selections from his private collection in a tribute to Mahlangu’s influence. Inspired by her vibrant Ndebele designs and abstract expressionist style, Tovey’s selection underscored the profound impact of Mahlangu’s work on contemporary art and culture.
This intimate event at Frieze celebrated both Mahlangu’s legacy and the release of The Paint is in My Heart, offering fans a rare chance to connect with her story and the artists and curators who continue to champion her groundbreaking work.
