Virginia Museum of Fine Arts - Art Residency, Virginia, USA - 2014
In 2014 the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts commissioned Esther Mahlangu to paint two large murals to ensure a vibrant entrance to their African art galleries.
During a month-long residency at the Virginia Museum of Fine art in Richmond, USA Esther painted two 9-by-15-foot murals at the entrance to the African art gallery. At the age of 78, Esther skillfully navigated ladders and scaffolding to produce two eye-catching murals which echo the patterns found on Ndebele beaded vestments, jewelry and the exteriors of their homes. During the residency the public were invited to visit the VMFA to watch Esther and her granddaughter Marriam while they worked to produce the commission.
During this visit to Richmond, Esther also spent some of her time teaching children art classes - a pastime that she often participates in, in her studio and at her home in South Africa.
