1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair
The recent 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair highlighted a momentous occasion for the art world as the South African artist Dr. Esther Mahlangu's book, TO PAINT IS IN MY HEART, was unveiled. Published by Thames & Hudson, the book provides an in-depth journey through Mahlangu’s life, from her upbringing in rural Mpumalanga to her global recognition as a master of Ndebele art.
The book, created with interviews conducted at Mahlangu’s homestead in September 2023, features insights from prominent art figures Hans Ulrich Obrist, Thomas Girst, and Azu Nwagbogu, capturing Mahlangu’s artistic philosophy and cultural impact. The foreword by curator Nontobeko Ntombela and personal reflections from figures like Koyo Kouoh, Trevor Noah, John Legend, and Mike Dean enrich this intimate portrait of Mahlangu’s legacy.
At the 1-54 fair, a panel discussion explored the book’s themes and Mahlangu's legacy, featuring speakers Thomas Girst, Azu Nwagbogu, and Craig Mark. The Melrose Gallery also showcased a solo exhibition of Dr. Mahlangu's work, drawing enthusiastic responses from attendees. While no signing took place, the event provided a powerful forum for sharing Mahlangu’s story and celebrating her iconic contributions to contemporary African art.
